By "bosses" I mean people I had the chance to work with and learn under, not my line managers. In study-abroad and migration groups online, there is a recurring argument about whether life is better here or back home. I have worked with Vietnamese and British colleagues, so here is one perspective.
At the end of 2021 I took my CELTA. During the course I worked with and learned from two British tutors, Jon and Lynn. The way they worked surprised me and earned my respect.
Punctuality
I studied online. I would join the Zoom room exactly on time, to the minute, and they were always already there waiting. He also ended every session exactly on time. If we had not got through the material, he took responsibility for having over-run, then sent documents or made it up another way. He never kept us late.
Care with words
He once cut across a colleague who was mid-lesson with real students. He caught it immediately and apologised three separate times: once there and then over the microphone, once as soon as the lesson ended, and once again during the feedback session on that colleague's teaching.
Criticism handled well
The tutors gave detailed, specific criticism, always aimed at what needed improving rather than at the person receiving it. Good work was praised sincerely, not as a sweetener before the real comments.
Total clarity about the work
To finish the course you had to teach eight hours and complete three written assignments. The requirements were spelled out in detail, and marking was transparent, criterion by criterion.
I do not think one way of working is right and the other wrong. I am describing a difference I noticed, nothing more.
